Gippsland Goldfields - Grant Historic Adventurer Map Gippsland Goldfields - Grant Historic Adventurer Map Alfred Howitt and his prospecting party discovered gold at Crooked River in 1860. He was followed by several hundred alluvial miners who settled into work around the rough mining townships known as Bull Town and Hog Town. In 1864 Alexander Beecher, a member of Angus McMillan's track cutting party picked up a piece of quartz impregnated with gold to start a rush of quartz miners and prospectors who scoured every spur and gully in the neighborhood. More than 200 gold-bearing quartz reefs were soon discovered and townships had developed at Grant, Talbotville, Howittville, Winchester, Thiel Town, Spring Hill, Summer Hill and Stonewall. Grant was the main town with many substantial buildings including hotels, banks, share-brokers, government offices and a wide variety of stores. The building sites, relics and abandoned holes of those people are now encompassed within the Grant Historic Area.
